Shifting

 Like everything else,
 human connections shift;
 from neglect, 
 from ineptness,
 from the stranglehold 
 of family ghosts.
 
 expectations demand retrofitting,
 the broken remnants of disappointment
 are discarded 
 onto the scrapheap
 of loss.
